Birds Up For Barry
Dr. Barry McKinney was a beloved leader in UTSA Student Affairs, dedicating 18 years to shaping the student experience and fostering the traditions that make Roadrunner life so special. His passion for student engagement helped establish many of UTSA’s most cherished traditions, including Midnight Light, BestFest, Día en la Sombrilla, Commencement, UTSA Football Game Day, and the Roadrunner Statue.
Barry’s impact on Roadrunner Nation is immeasurable—he mentored and inspired thousands of student leaders, challenging them with kindness, humor, and a deep belief in their potential. Whether through a late-night event on campus, a spirited game day, or a meaningful ceremony, Barry’s influence continues to be felt in the traditions that bring Roadrunners together.
The Birds Up for Barry fund ensures that the programs and experiences he helped build continue to thrive for future generations. Contributions to this fund celebrate Barry’s legacy by supporting the traditions he loved, allowing his family—his wife Jan and their sons Mark and Scott—to see his impact live on each year.
As a fun way to give back, donors who contribute $20 or more will have the opportunity to name a UTSA digital squirrel—a nod to the campus squirrels Barry often joked were the true keepers of UTSA spirit.
Now and forever, Dr. Barry McKinney is a Roadrunner.
