Black Student Initiatives

UTSA cultivates an environment of dialogue and discovery, where integrity, excellence, inclusiveness, respect, collaboration and innovation are fostered. To best support our Black student community, UTSA’s Men of Honor, Women of Honor, Black Student Union and UTSA NAACP and Black Faculty & Staff Association, are launching this crowdfunding project to provide resources and opportunities for students that will promote cultural awareness and pride, as well as enhance students’ academic success.

With your gift, you will help create a named endowment to support Black Student Initiatives. Not only would this endowment be a permanent source of support for the Black student body, but it would also honor Mrs. Karla Broadus, a long-standing faculty member and mentor to so many of us. Mrs. Broadus has been a pillar of the Black community at UTSA since 1996 and is an inspiration to students, faculty, and staff alike.

Funds will support programming for Black students through the establishment of a Black Student Leadership Council, under the direction of the Black Faculty & Staff Association. Student leaders will help decide how the resources will be used, including for events/ programs to promote unity and community-building where all UTSA students will be invited and welcome.

Additional programming for students may include:

  • SA to DC with the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce
  • The Collegiate Black Male Retreat
  • The Fearless Leadership Institute Retreat (For Black Women)
  • The Black Student Athlete Summit
  • Constellation Mentoring with Black professionals in San Antonio and Alumni
  • The McNair Scholars Programs
  • Spring Break on Wall Street
  • Study Abroad
  • Graduate fellows program

If funding allows and in alignment with the university’s efforts to recruit Black faculty, this initiative will also support the future recruitment and retention of faculty who will assist in the development and implementation of programming for Black students at UTSA, in addition to serving the broader community by attracting diverse voices and advancing teaching and research.

If you are interested in donating to more inclusion, equity and justice programs and initiatives, consider Multicultural Events, GLBTQ Endowed Scholarship, or Support Dreamers at UTSA also included in Giving Day.

Impact

The UTSA education and experiences of students like Priscilla are enriched when you support Black Student Initiatives and UTSA Giving Day. “It’s really just understanding who they’re giving to – it’s students. We are their legacy, and it’s important to make sure that they highlight and amplify that legacy – and protect it.” Read more here.
