Leadership and Volunteer Services provides multiple community service opportunities and Alternative Break Experiences. The Alternative Break program started in 1994 through the student organization VOICES (Volunteer Organization Involving Community, Education and Service) with 20 students embarking to Reynosa, Mexico. Since then, hundreds of students have participated in alternative break experiences and community service opportunities each year to help serve communities near and far. To make this possible, we need your help in providing funding for meals, transportation, and housing costs for trip participants, as well as the cost of adding additional community service projects to expand our program. Through your support on UTSA Giving Day, students who participate in the Alternative Break Program and community service efforts can meet a community need, get a deeper understanding of a social issue, and leave UTSA with a better understanding of how to be a life-long active citizen in our greater communities.
Leadership and Volunteer Services will offer a True Colors group training for up to 40 people for donations over $150.
From last year’s Giving Day funds, students were able to participate in three alternative break opportunities in March 2022 without any personal expenses. These students returned to UTSA invigorated to participate in leadership opportunities at future alternative breaks as well as other on-campus experiences.
