As part of a national effort, the collegiate recovery program strives to meet the needs of college/university students who struggle or have struggled with substance use and other addictive behaviors. The UTSA Recovery Center, under the umbrella of Wellbeing Services, provides comprehensive recovery support to all UTSA students, including recovery development, peer support, assessment and counseling interventions, and education and prevention materials.
This year we celebrated 10 years of supporting students recovering from substance use disorders and addictions. Our community has grown to over 40 students, and we were designated a “reviewed” program through the Standardized Review of Collegiate Recovery Advancement, becoming one of the first universities in the nation to receive accreditation from the Association of Recovery in Higher Education.
Funds from last year’s Giving Day supported program development including training our student members to become new Recovery Support Peer Specialists.
“The recovery center has impacted me by getting me here to UTSA. I came out of a sober living two years ago and was so nervous about getting back into school... I reached out to one of the workers for the recovery center and she emailed me and now I'm here at UTSA and I am a student employee at the recovery center working on my mechanical engineering degree. Without the recovery center, I wouldn't have friends in recovery. I wouldn't have meetings here on campus, I wouldn't have this family. I'm so thankful for UTSA Roadrunner Recovery.” -Crystal
With support from this year’s donors, the Recovery Center hopes to increase the amount of Recovery Support Peer Specialists to provide that invaluable peer support.
This year’s challenge:
If $2,000 is raised, Michael Vela the associate director for Wellbeing Services will dye his hair blue.
