Since 1993, the student organization VOICES (Volunteer Organization Involving Community, Education and Service) has guided hundreds of students each year to help serve communities near and far through their participation in alternative break experiences and community service opportunities.
With guidance from the Student Involvement Center, VOICES continues to provide multiple community services opportunities and assist with alternative break experiences.
The Alternative Break program started in 1994 through VOICES with 20 students embarking to Reynosa, Mexico. In 2023, Roadrunners provided 5,102 hours of services to more than 60 community partners in the San Antonio area. The alternative break trips over the last few years have focused on LGBTQIA+ advocacy, environmental justice and conservation, AIDS awareness and affordable housing, children with special needs, hunger and homelessness, and restoration from the effects of hurricanes.
"Alternative Break was an experiential learning opportunity. I was able to learn about all aspects of the social issue, hands-on experience through direct service, and group/personal reflections. Not only has this opportunity strengthened my relationship with the community, but also with other trip participants. I look forward to these trips every year as it introduces me to new perspectives, students, and communities."
-Nhi Ho, New Mexico – Trip Lead & VOICES Membership Coordinator 2023-2024
“Alternative Break - Dallas was a different experience that was so impactful. I had the ability to complete various service projects and engage with community partners every day, seeing smiles on their faces was heartwarming. It feels good to give back to others through my university involvement”
-Wisdom Ene John-Mark – AB Participant 2023 & VOICES Public Relations Chair 2023 - 2024
Through generous gifts from previous Giving Day events, these experiences have been free or half the cost to participating students. Donations from this year’s campaign will be used to continue providing these immersive experiences by funding meals, transportation, and housing costs for trip participants, as well as the cost of adding additional community service projects to expand our program.
Give today to help VOICES and the Student Involvement Center expand their efforts supporting roadrunners as they meet a community need, get a deeper understanding of a social issue, and leave UTSA with a better understanding of how to be a life-long active citizen in our greater communities.
